{"id":1474,"date":"2018-09-26T18:08:19","date_gmt":"2018-09-26T18:08:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/?p=1474"},"modified":"2018-09-26T18:27:26","modified_gmt":"2018-09-26T18:27:26","slug":"the-zombies-hoards-are-arising-in-firedrake-vr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/the-zombies-hoards-are-arising-in-firedrake-vr\/","title":{"rendered":"The zombies hoards are arising in Firedrake VR."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s in a texture?<\/p>\n<p>I have been working on creating a great zombie hoard in Firedrake.\u00a0 The underlining story line is that the Necro-Mages of Ozmot are abducting local villagers and harvesting their skeletons to create their dreaded undead army.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Throughout the game, the villagers go through a process of being turned into 1) fresh zombies\u2026 2) rotten zombies\u2026 3) skeletons.<\/p>\n<p>So, I need a few models to create a great zombie hoard and more importantly a few different textures on the various zombie \u00a0models.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I have two zombie models ready, one for the fresh zombie and one for the more rotten zombies.\u00a0\u00a0 I have ten different textures for the rotten zombie, but I need to work on the fresh zombie a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the two don\u2019t look like they are actually a progression from one to the other.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I had the \u201cfresh\u201d zombie lying about from some Unity store asset package and did a bit of blender modeling to create the \u201crotten\u201d zombie.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0But the textures look and feel don\u2019t match at all and the two \u00a0models don\u2019t fit well together. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It breaks the immersion \u00a0of the VR experience I think.<\/p>\n<p>I originally thought I would only use one zombie model with an array of different animation to take advantage of Unity\u2019s Dynamic Batching option.\u00a0 I thought I could save some draw calls doing this and really optimize the overall app for Mobile VR, but alas\u2026. I could never really get it to work correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, I decided to use different zombies with completely different textures and animation and A.I. settings to really add some variety in the hoard and then just limit the number on screen at any one time.\u00a0 Luckily the Oculus GO, seems to handle 6 or so on screen at one time, \u00a0enough for some fun zombie chop\u2019en action.<\/p>\n<p>So, off to photoshop to try and \u201cnormalize\u201d the two.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Image #1 shows the two zombies side by side.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie1-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1472\" src=\"http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie1-2-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie1-2-300x190.jpg 300w, http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie1-2-768x485.jpg 768w, http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie1-2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>You can easily see that the look of each monster, don\u2019t really match.\u00a0 The models clock in at about 900-1000 vertices, so they are great for mobile VR.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Image #2<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie_2-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1473\" src=\"http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie_2-2-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie_2-2-300x231.jpg 300w, http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie_2-2-768x592.jpg 768w, http:\/\/huesgfx.com\/firedrake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/zombie_2-2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>After working in Photoshop on the \u201cfresh\u201d zombie texture, the two are starting to look a bit more in-line together.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I am starting to like the flow of the zombies now.\u00a0\u00a0 There are over 20 different zombie animations, 8 different attack animations 20 different sounds and now about 15 different textures I can apply to these two different zombie models..
